Water quality and water usage on farms is a contentious issue. By necessity, farms use a lot of water, which means abstraction can be an issue, especially during the drier months. To safeguard crops and produce the highest yields possible, agriculture uses fertilisers and pesticides which, if not properly managed, can seep into the groundwater causing pollution. Livestock farming produces a lot of animal waste which, again, if not properly managed, can seep into groundwater or be discharged into rivers causing pollution.
Thankfully, there are a number of schemes run by both the water companies and the government to help farmers preserve water quality. Here we take a closer look at some of those schemes.
Government grants
The Water Capital Grant Scheme is open to farmers and land managers. It offers grants of £10,000 towards works that will improve water management and quality and enhance local environments.
Countryside Stewardship grants provide financial support to farmers wanting to enhance the natural environment by improving water quality, increasing biodiversity, improving natural habitats, expanding woodland areas and improving natural flood management.
The Sustainable Farming Incentive was introduced as part of the Agricultural Transition Plan. It provides payment for farmers to introduce a number of welfare and environmental improvements, including improved water quality.
