Castle Water and Bowls Scotland team up for World Water Day 2025

Make every drop count on the green

As part of our commitment to sustainability, Castle Water is proud to partner with Bowls Scotland for World Water Day 2025. Together, we’re helping bowling clubs across Scotland take simple but effective steps to reduce water waste and improve efficiency, ensuring their greens remain in top condition for years to come.

Simple steps to save water and keep your club sustainable

Monitor water usage

Keeping track of your club’s water consumption is the first step towards efficiency. Regular meter readings help identify any unusual spikes in usage, which could indicate leaks or overwatering. Understanding your consumption patterns allows you to make informed decisions on where savings can be made.

Fix leaks promptly

Even a small drip from a tap or pipe can waste thousands of litres of water over time. Regularly inspect all plumbing, irrigation systems, and equipment for leaks and ensure that repairs are carried out swiftly to prevent unnecessary water loss.

Use collected rainwater

Installing water butts and rainwater harvesting systems can provide a free and sustainable water source for maintaining your greens and surrounding plants. Not only does this reduce reliance on mains water, but it also helps manage excess rainwater effectively.

Water at the right time

Watering during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, reduces evaporation and allows the soil to absorb moisture more effectively. This ensures that greens receive the maximum benefit from every drop of water used.

Reduce overwatering

Overwatering can lead to shallow root growth and wasted resources. Use moisture meters to assess soil hydration levels and only water when necessary. This not only saves water but also promotes healthier, more resilient greens.

Cover water storage

Uncovered water tanks and open containers can lose significant amounts of water through evaporation. Installing lids or covers on water storage units helps retain water, ensuring it remains available when needed.

Sweep instead of hosing

Using a broom to clean paths, patios, and other hard surfaces is a simple yet effective way to conserve water. Hosing down surfaces can waste hundreds of litres of water unnecessarily, whereas sweeping gets the job done without excess water use.

Encourage members to save water

Raising awareness among club members about the importance of water conservation ensures that everyone plays a role in sustainability efforts. Simple initiatives like signage, reminders, and friendly competitions can encourage responsible water use throughout the club.

Building a sustainable future for bowling clubs

By making small changes, clubs can reduce water costs, protect the environment, and build a more sustainable future. These water-saving actions not only help preserve a vital resource but also contribute to the long-term sustainability of the sport. With rising water costs and increasing environmental concerns, adopting better water management practices is more important than ever.

Sustainability in sport is a shared responsibility, and by working together, clubs can make a meaningful difference. Whether it’s fixing leaks, using rainwater harvesting, or simply educating members, every effort counts toward a greener, more water-efficient future.
